Preparing for a Remote Route
Remote-route checklist (0 of 6)
Kept only on this page. Nothing is sent.
What Happens at the Crossing
Choose a direction to see the general order of procedures.
- 1Leave from Ibri or further east
- 2Long desert stretch to the border
- 3Oman departure: passport and customs
- 4Saudi entry: passport and customs
- 5Long desert stretch toward Al-Ahsa
General sequence. The exact order can vary with current procedures, passenger status and vehicle.
What It Connects
- ›Ibri and northern Oman with eastern Saudi Arabia
- ›Muscat with Riyadh and the Eastern Province on longer routes
Passengers Should Check
- A valid passport, or for eligible GCC citizens a national ID card where the countries accept it
- A visa or entry permission for the destination if your nationality needs one
- Residency documents if you live in one of the countries
- Saudi residents: an exit/re-entry visa to leave and return to Saudi Arabia
Vehicles May Need
- Vehicle registration, in the original
- Insurance that is valid in the destination country
- An authorization letter if the vehicle is not registered in the driver's name
- Operator documents and permits for commercial passenger transport
- A vehicle in good condition for long desert driving
Requirements vary by nationality, residency, vehicle ownership, route and current rules. Verify them with the relevant authorities before travel.
Know Before You Go
Plan for remoteness
Services along the route are limited. Fuel, water, rest and the vehicle's condition matter more here than on any other GCC corridor.
Daylight and timing
Plan departure so the longest stretches fall at a sensible time of day, and allow for the border on top.
A newer route
The road opened in 2021, so older guides and maps may not show it. Use current sources.
Common Mistakes
- Setting off without a fuel and rest plan
- Using an old map that predates the road
- Not checking entry requirements for both countries before a remote crossing
